Five HCS teachers selected for 2010 Science PLUS Institute

(posted on March 9, 2010)

Five Horry County Schools’ teachers are among 118 educators from 68 school districts selected to attend the Science PLUS Institute at Roper Mountain Science Center, a facility of Greenville County Schools. The institute, funded by a state Education Improvement Act (EIA) grant, gives intensive training in science teaching methods and activities to public school science teachers from throughout South Carolina.

HCS teachers attending the Institute this coming summer are: Cherry Willoughby, Green Sea Floyds High School; Ebony Bethea-Livingston, Jean Powell, Jack Hord, and Marge Laporte, Loris Middle School.

Courses for the 2010 session include seven different one-week classes in life, earth and physical science. Classes correspond to the state’s science academic standards for grades 3-8. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate math and language arts skills into their science lessons and to look for opportunities to make science connections when teaching other subjects. Science PLUS also provides resources for hands-on activities with students.  Teachers receive science materials and supplies to duplicate the lessons they have learned.
