PUBLIC NOTICE of ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS
HORRY COUNTY SCHOOLS 2011-2012
Horry County Schools announces the Title I schools that are classified as being “In Improvement” for 2011-2012. These schools’ state assessment scores have not attained required Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years in the following areas: Same content area of English Language Arts or mathematics, required participation rate of children tested and/or graduated, and required state attendance rates.
School Improvement levels range from schools Newly Identified to those in Restructuring. A designation of “Hold” reflects specific mid-level progress in attaining AYP. Each improvement level mandates certain required sanctions according to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).
For 2011-2012, the following Title I schools are “In Improvement” according to NCLB:
Horry County Schools Corrective Action
Homewood Elementary Newly Identified Delay
Loris Elementary Continuing School Improvement
Loris Middle Restructuring Hold
Myrtle Beach Primary Continuing School Improvement
Pee Dee Elementary Planning to Restructure
South Conway Elementary Planning to Restructure Hold
Whittemore Park Middle Restructuring
Under the requirements of No Child Left Behind, Horry County Schools is classified as “Corrective Action” in improvement for 2011. This status means that certain student subgroups tested in the district did not meet the AYP requirements established by the federal and state governments for the past two years. The district is in the process of updating the improvement plan to address specific subgroup achievement needs.
Schools in Improvement as well as the district are offering various supplemental resources to improve student achievement. These include, but are not limited to, curriculum coaches, academic programs, after school tutorials, daily tutorials, professional development, parent involvement trainings, data analysis and research, and interventions. Parents may assist these achievement efforts by attending teacher-parent conferences and academic curricular offerings, Title I School Improvement Planning meetings, PTO, School Improvement Council meetings, and by monitoring homework and other student responsibilities.
In compliance with requirements of No Child Left Behind, all parents and other interested parties are invited to participate in the School Improvement and/or District Improvement process. School and district staffs seek public opinions to aid in the development of multiple School Improvement Plans and a District Improvement Plan. Additionally, Schools in Improvement will conduct other public meetings on their respective campuses during December 2011 and January 2012. Individual school principals will issue public meeting invitations and notices, or interested parties may call the respective schools for more information about meeting plans. All individuals are welcome to participate.
Individuals may address questions or comments about School or District Improvement to the Office of Title I, Horry County Schools, at 843-488-6809.
