Special Education Substitutes -- Teachers & Paraprofessionals


Various training is required depending on the type of classroom assistance for which you want to be employed.  The various opportunities are provided below with links to more information:

The schedule for Special Education Training Sessions for Substitutes will be posted on SD Online.  You must have attended Human Resources Substitute Orientation prior to registering for classes and have a current ID Badge and Employee Number.  Request your login for SD Online HERE.  Instructions on using SD Online are posted to the left.

All training sessions consist of:

A.  Regular Substitute Training (REQUIRED) and MUST be completed prior to registering for Special Education training. 

  • Substitute Teachers/Aides (regular classroom) Eligibility (click here)

B.  All Special Education Classroom and Temporary Paraprofessional Positions 
     Working with Students with Disabilities

  • This is a 2 hour class
  • Required substitute Training as described in A
  • Class size limited to 30 participants
  • Working with students with disabilities
    Topics—overview of special education laws, regulations, & service
                -strengthening instructional & behavioral skills
                -characteristics/categories of Special Education Services
                -confidentiality of information

C.  Specific Areas-Special Education:

Autism -- ABA Training

  • This is a 1 & 1/4 day class
  • Required substitute training as described in A and B 
  • Temporary positions working with students with autism 
  • Maximum of 30 Participants
    Topics—overview of neurobiological disorder of autism
                -communication, socialization, stereotypical behavior of students with autism
                -monitor student progress with data collection
                -medicaid procedures
                -professional collaboration/communication with team members
                -flexibility to move quickly/freely/calmly
                -openness for constructive criticism·        
  • Must pass a written skills test

Crisis Prevention/Intervention (CPI) Overview

  • This is a 2 hour class and is an overview ONLY
  • Required substitute training described in A & B above
  • Maximum of 30 participants
  • Focus—skills for prevention, intervention & postvention of inappropriate behaviors &  working with at-risk students exhibiting verbal and/or physical aggression
  • This class is an overview and not a certification class.  If you need to be certified in CPI you need to take a full day certification class.
