COLUMBIA – MaryEllen Greene, a member of the Horry County school board, was elected to serve as the Region 4 Director of the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) during the association’s annual business meeting Saturday, December 5.
The annual business meeting, which was held during the association’s Legislative Advocacy Conference, includes voting delegates from most of the state’s 85 school boards. In addition to the election of association officers, delegates adopt resolutions to guide the association during the 2010 legislative session.
Greene will serve for three years of the unexpired term of Marion Two board member John Hughes who was elected treasurer. As the region’s director, Greene will serve on the 22-member board of directors representing school boards in Marion, Dillon and Horry counties.
Greene has served on the Horry County board since 1998. She received a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from St. John University and is a retired educator in early childhood development. She is active in numerous community organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma and the Rotary Club of Myrtle Beach. She serves as chairperson of the Board of Visitors for the Edwards College for Humanities at Coastal Carolina University and on the board of directors for the Art Museum in Myrtle Beach.
She and her husband Bill have one daughter, Erin, and a son-in-law David.

Officers elected to lead the association’s board of directors for a one-year term are as follows:
- President, Bruce Davis, Hampton Two School Board
- President-elect, Cynthia Smith, Lexington One School Board
- Vice president, Richard Cook, Florence Three School Board
- Treasurer, John Hughes, Marion Two School Board
- Secretary, Beth Branham, Lexington Two School Board
SCSBA is the statewide professional organization for the state’s 85 local school boards.
