(posted on September 22, 2009)

Sean UtheSean Uthe of the Academy for Technology and Academics is one of only two South Carolina public high school teachers among 185 middle and secondary science teachers from across the nation named Fellows in the 2009 New Science Teacher Academy. Selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide, Uthe will participate in a year-long professional development program designed to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence, and improve teacher content knowledge.

Uthe and Linda Hellstein of Ridge View High School in Richland District Two were on the list announced Monday by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the largest professional organization in the world promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning. Representing 47 states, the District of Columbia, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands, the 2009 Fellows were selected on the basis of several criteria, including showing evidence of a solid science background and displaying a strong interest in growing as a professional science educator.

Each Fellow receives a comprehensive NSTA membership package, online mentoring with trained educators who teach in the same discipline and the opportunity to participate in a variety of web-based professional training activities, including web seminars. In addition, Fellows receive financial support to attend and participate in NSTA's 2010 National Conference on Science Education in Philadelphia.

The New Science Teacher Academy began in the spring of 2007 and was co-founded by the Amgen Foundation. The academy aims to help reduce the high attrition rate in the science teaching profession by providing professional and mentoring support to early-career science teachers.
