Waccamaw Community Foundation and DonorsChoose deliver on classroom wish lists

(posted on February 4, 2010)

Online requests posted by teachers at Myrtle Beach High School brought new net books, hand-held video cameras, new history books, and materials to support print projects of the entrepreneur class. At the neighboring Myrtle Beach Intermediate School, an online posting brought an instructional kit for mathematics and a video camera. Aynor Middle School eighth graders got new science notebooks. Burgess Elementary School got new ink cartridges to print photographs for science and social studies classes. The Academy for Arts, Science and Technology received a new set of books from the list of South Carolina Young Adult Book Award winners.

A partnership between Donors Choose and the Waccamaw Community Foundation has made it easier than ever for Horry County Schools’ teachers to get extra tools and supplies to support classroom projects. DonorsChoose is a national organization whose website allows teachers to post information about what they need to support a project or initiative. Donors have an opportunity to review teacher postings and make financial contributions to the any of the projects they want.

Once a project reaches it funding goal, DonorsChoose delivers the materials to the school, along with a kit to enable the school to thank benefactors for their help. The Waccamaw Community Foundation, with support from the Knight Foundation, partnered with DonorsChoose to match contributions made to Horry County Schools’ projects. If DonorsChoose collects $200 for a classroom project budgeted at $400, then the Waccamaw Community Foundation will match the contribution with another $200.

District-wide, 24 schools have received awards for 152 projects through DonorsChoose. To submit a proposal or review those that are posted by HCS teachers, go to
DonorsChoose.org.
