Former Horry County Schools’ Superintendent Gerrita Postlewait was among four new members recently named to the State Board of Education.
Among
the State Board’s responsibilities are developing academic standards,
rules and regulations that govern the state's public elementary and
secondary schools; granting state teachers' certificates; and also
revoking teachers’ certificates when warranted.
Sixteen of the board’s 17 members are appointed by legislators representing South Carolina’s judicial circuits; the 17th is appointed by the governor. Postlewait represents the 15th judicial circuit of Georgetown and Horry counties. She replaces Joe Isaac of Pawleys Island.
A
resident of Myrtle Beach, Postlewait was superintendent of Horry County
Schools from 1996 through 2006. During that time, she was named the
state’s outstanding district superintendent.
