Horry
County Schools is now accepting applications through May 16 for the
2008 Summer Scholars program. The Summer Scholars program offers high
achieving students in grades 3-12 the opportunity to take courses in
the humanities, mathematics, science, creative arts, and technology.
Students
may elect to take up to four courses. Each course lasts one week and
runs for three and one-half hours a day. The first week of classes runs
June 16- 20, with the second week running June 23-27. Morning classes
are from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Afternoon classes are from 12:30 until 4
p.m. Classes are held at the Academy for the Arts, Science, and
Technology located at 895 International Drive, in Myrtle Beach. A
variety of classes are available to students to choose from including:
the art of mosaics; digital media; digital storytelling; Avant Garde
music and art; music history; the history of Rock-n-Roll; theatre;
dance; journalism; printmaking; papermaking; podcasting; the living
history of Veteran Voices; sign language; playwriting; a study of
political propaganda; politics and the media; mythology; Mock Trial;
critical film analysis; screenwriting; puppetry; Greek and Egyptian
studies; a study of Bolivia, South America; creative writing; crime
scene investigation; robotics; first aid and treatment of minor
injuries and illnesses; survival skills; marine science; videography;
physics; and more. The fees for
courses are as follows: one class - $125; two classes - $225; three
classes - $325; and four classes - $425. Classes in mosaics and
robotics require an additional $10 fee. Scholarships are available for
identified gifted and talented or high achieving students who are
eligible for free lunch. Classes
are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and are limited to 15
