County Schools will hold district-wide registration for the 2008-09
school year on August 5. The first day of school for students is August
25. The only exception is the county's only year-round school, Daisy
Elementary School, which opens on July 21. Parents and guardians are
strongly encouraged to register their child(ren) during the school's
registration time. The first day of school is a full instructional day.
Before registering for school, here are a few things you should know:
Requirements for new students…Students
who are registering in the district for the first time should present a
legal birth certificate and certificate of immunization. All students
must meet immunization requirements for attendance. A social security
number is requested. If students have previously been enrolled in
another school outside of the district or state, the receiving school
will send for educational records if parents do not bring them at the
time of registration.
Entrance age requirements…Students
registering for kindergarten must be five years old on or before
September 1. Students registering for first grade must be six years old
on or before September 1. Enrollment in four-year old child development
classes is limited and students must be tested before admission. These
students must be four years old on or before September 1.
Immunization requirements…
Proof of immunization is required for new students. Minimum requirements are as follows:
- Four (4) does of any combination of DTP, DT, DTP-Hib, DTaP, Td or Tdap vaccine with at least one (1) dose received on or after the fourth birthday.
- Three (3) doses of any combination of oral or inactivated Polio vaccine with at least one (1) dose received on or after the fourth birthday.
- Two (2) doses of Rubeola (Measles) vaccine with both doses received on or after the first birthday and separated by at least one month.
- One (1) dose of Rubella (German Measles) vaccine received on or after the first birthday.
- One (1) dose of Mumps vaccine received on or after the first birthday.
- Three (3) doses of Hepatitis B vaccine.
- One (1) dose of Varicella vaccine received on or after the first birthday or positive history of disease for all children admitted to kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Two (2) doses of Varicella vaccine, separated by at least one month, are required for unimmunized children ages 13 or older who have no positive history of disease.
Immunizations
are available at your local Health Department. Proof of immunization is
required at the time of registration. If you have questions about
immunization your local medical provider or your local Health
Department at 248-1500 (in Conway), 448-8407 (in Myrtle Beach),
399-5553 (in North Myrtle Beach) and 756-4027 (in Loris).
Proof of residency…When
registering, the student(s) and parent(s) must provide documentation of
physical address. Acceptable verifiable documentation includes a
current electric/water/sewer bill, current and signed rental agreement,
approved transfer form, proof of guardianship or a valid receipt and
letter on property letterhead indicating student is staying in hotel or
rental condo for a long term. A driver's license and voter registration
card may be used to verify address, but will not serve as sole
evidence. At the time of registration, parents will be asked to provide
the vehicle license tag numbers of all vehicles that will be picking up
or dropping off students on a regular basis.
Student Transfers…
In-district
transfers to other schools may be approved for hardship situations.
Hardship situations may include, but are not limited to, childcare,
parent’s work schedule or location, health care, preferred academic
offerings, and intent to relocate the primary residence within the year.
Parents
who wish to send their child to a school outside their attendance area,
due to a hardship situation, should complete and return a transfer
application. Applications must state the reason that the parent is
seeking a transfer. Previously approved transfer students need not
reapply to attend the same school or the feeder school in the same
attendance area. Parents are responsible for providing transportation
for students for elective transfers.
Due
to overcrowding in some schools, transfers requests may not be approved
for schools operating at 115 percent above the capacity. These schools
include Carolina Forest Elementary School, Ocean Bay Elementary School,
Lakewood Elementary School, Loris Elementary School, Forestbrook
Elementary School, Waccamaw Elementary School, Midland Elementary
School, Seaside Elementary School, and Forestbrook Middle School. To
receive a transfer application, call the Office of Student Affairs at
488-6770.
Nonresident students who are qualified to enroll in HCS are required to pay tuition in an amount of $5,367.
Fees…There
are no registration fees or insurance costs for school-day coverage for
students registering for school. Parents may elect to purchase meals or
additional insurance at the time of registration.
Paying for meals…
There
are several payment options available to purchase meals at school.
Paying in advance ensures that your child does not have to keep up with
money at school. Applications for reduced and free meals are available
at the time of registration or at any time during the year. Contact the
cafeteria manager at your child's school or the HCS Food Service staff
at 488-6925 for more information.

The coverage provided by HCS is secondary to any other insurance
coverage provided for the student. For a fee, parents may purchase
24-hour insurance protection with increased benefits. Twenty-four hour
primary coverage for accidents is available for $125. A 24-hour
supplemental insurance is available for $50. An extended dental plan is
available for $10. Ask the school for information regarding these plans.
